WHAT WE ARE LEARNING
MATH
Students are working hard in fifth grade! We had fun getting to know each other using math numbers last week. This week I assessed their multiplication tables. Each student knows what number they need to practice and will learn a few strategies to help with this. For example, they are timing themselves practicing, they can make flashcards, practice online and/or use practice sheets. We also completed lesson 1 and students are well on their way to show mastery in multiplying and dividing by 10s, 100s, and 1000s from millions to thousandths.
Tomorrow students will take the iReady assessment. The data gathered will help to make intervention groups and begin to fill some of the gaps each student has individually.

READING
We have spent some time re-building reading stamina. Every child has chosen a book or two from either my library or the library at school. Their homework is to read a minimum of 20 minutes each night. Starting next week, they will have a nightly response to go along with their reading, but for now I am just asking that they read a minimum of 20 minutes/day.
This week we will also spend some time setting up their reading and writing journals, discussing what it means to choose a just right book, discussing the 40 Book Challenge they are striving for this year, and working on writing.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Their first assignment is a mapping activity. They have all received a map of the United States and it is their job to label all the states using either a map or atlas, and then creating a key of where they have been, where they want to go, where they were born, etc. This is being completed in class this week.
