HOMEWORK
|
Monday-Thursday
-Math sheet
-Reading Response
-Read 20 minutes
Tuesday--word sort.
Have your child sort their words and teach someone at home their pattern
Tuesday--speed sort.
Time your child and see how fast they can correctly sort their words. See if they can beat their time.
Wednesday--blind sort.
Give your child their headings and read the words aloud individually so your child cannot see the word. They must tell you the appropriate heading it goes under.
I have sent home a packet of all the homework guidelines. On the last page, there is a list of different choice options for a Thursday activity. FRIDAY THIS HOMEWORK IS DUE. Someone at home must sign off on the homework sheet that your child completed an activity each night. |
WHAT WE ARE LEARNING
|
MATH
|
We will be multiplying and dividing fractions for the next few weeks. Here are some videos to go along with the lessons we will be learning between now and Thanksgiving break: Lesson 1-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_9_NGVOK0s Lesson 2-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJjtpkgK5pw Lesson 3- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJoMoKq_Tak Lesson 4- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0Vzo1PR7qg Please continue to have your child work on their multiplication tables or division. They can go on Xtramath, practice timing self using a piece of paper that they write the table down out of order or make flash cards. They need to have these tables memorized as soon as possible, in order to be proficient with their 5th grade math skills. |
READING, WRITING, and WORDS THEIR WAY
|
READING:
This week we will be focusing on a new skill--identifying the main idea of a text and the key details that support this idea. Because our first unit is nonfiction, we will be using nonfiction texts to practice identifying main idea and key details. However, students will be transferring this knowledge over into their guided reading groups where they read a blend of fiction and nonfiction texts.
**For homework, students are to continue reading a minimum of 20 minutes each night. They are also to complete a reading response to accompany their reading. They may choose one of the following strategies:
WRITING:
Continuing with their personal narratives, this week we will be working on creating strong leads and endings. Students will be going back into their narratives after instruction to improve the beginning and ending of their story.
WORDS THEIR WAY:
Per usual, students will receive their new sort/pattern for the week. They are to complete one assignment each night to reinforce their sort.
|
SOCIAL STUDIES
|
This week we will finish up our unit by learning about a few more explorers-- Hernando de Soto and Vasco da Gama. After the Thanksgiving break, students will receive their Unit 1 performance task where they will be asked to create a journal of exploration from the point of view of either Christopher Columbus, a Taino Native American, King Ferdinand/Queen Isabella, or a crew member.
|
SCIENCE
|
Students will be tested on the moon phases and the movement of the earth, moon and sun on Monday(Harvard) or Tuesday (Dartmouth). They should be using their study guide that they created last week to study! We will be moving on to the water cycle starting Tuesday! This unit will be hands on and very interactive with their first essential question being "How much fresh water is on the earth?".
