HOMEWORK
Monday-Thursday
-Math sheet
-Reading Response
-Read 20 minutes
-Words Their Way
Monday--word sort.
Have your child sort their words and teach someone at home their pattern
Tuesday--speed sort.
Time your child and see how fast they can correctly sort their words. See if they can beat their time.
Wednesday--blind sort.
Give your child their headings and read the words aloud individually so your child cannot see the word. They must tell you the appropriate heading it goes under.
Thursday-- choice!
I have sent home a packet of all the homework guidelines. On the last page, there is a list of different choice options for a Thursday activity.
FRIDAY THIS HOMEWORK IS DUE.
Someone at home must sign off on the homework sheet that your child completed an activity each night.
WHAT WE ARE LEARNING
MATH
We will continue to be working on multiplying and dividing this week. Students will be connecting area model and distributive property with partial products and standard algorithm. They will continue to work on their multiplication and division tables along with filling the gap with IReady lessons.
Here are some links to support lessons learned this week:
Lesson 4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DfTwwGHYpc
Lesson 5: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGknTYYufQo

READING, WRITING, and WORDS THEIR WAY
READING:
This week we will continue to work on what we started just before the break--identifying the main idea and key details of a nonfiction text.  We will be using the boxes and bullets structure to help students organize their understanding--main idea goes in the box and key, supporting details follow as bullets.

WRITING:
This week and next week we will be focusing on figurative language and how to add it into their writing to add more descriptive detail.  This week, we will be focusing on similes and metaphors.  Next week we will work with hyperboles and onomatopoeia.

WORDS THEIR WAY:
Students received their new sort this week.  As always, their homework will be due on Friday.
  • Monday-- teach someone at home your sort
  • Tuesday-- speed sort
  • Wednesday-- blind sort
  • Thursday-- choice activity from list
  • Friday-- DUE
**Students are also responsible for their 20 minutes of reading and a reading response to go with what they read every night.  These will be checked each day for completion.
SOCIAL STUDIES
We are wrapping up our first unit! Students will be starting their performance task this week. Their job is to create a journal about Columbus' first voyage and encounter with the Taino Native Americans. In their journal, they are responsible for discussing the reasons for exploration, the new technologies they were introduced to, the encounter with others in the New World, and clearly express their point of view. Students will be given a choice as to what point of view they would like to take on as the writer. They can either write their journal as Columbus, a crew member, a Taino, or Queen Isabella/King Ferdinand.
SCIENCE
Starting last week, the students began a Mystery Science unit on our Watery Planet, including the water cycle, resources and systems. This unit will help students develop the idea that water is a profoundly important natural resource, but one which requires surprising ingenuity to find and maintain. Last week's lesson answered the essential question of "How much water is on the Earth?". In this mystery, students use estimation and graphing to discover the surprising difference in the amounts of fresh and salt water on Earth. This week, students will answer the question "When you turn on the faucet, where does the water come from?". In this mystery, students construct an explanation about a surprising phenomenon: the existence of underground water. Then they will play a game in which they must obtain and combine information and groundwater in order to select the best site to build a town.
REMINDERS
