-Words Their Way

Monday--word sort.
Have your child sort their words and teach someone at home their pattern

Tuesday--speed sort.
Time your child and see how fast they can correctly sort their words. See if they can beat their time.
Wednesday--blind sort
Give your child their headings and read the words aloud individually so your child cannot see the word. They must tell you the appropriate heading it goes under.
Thursday-- choice!
I have sent home a packet of all the homework guidelines. On the last page, there is a list of different choice options for a Thursday activity.
FRIDAY THIS HOMEWORK IS DUE
Someone at home must sign off on the homework sheet that your child completed an activity each night.

WHAT WE ARE LEARNING
MATH
We finished up math iReady and I will be using the data to support them during intervention. Please have your child work on iReady lessons at home to help them to fill gaps in their learning. These lessons are based on the assessment and will review and assess skills they did not understand. I will be checking their progress regularly and be able to work with them if they continue to struggle.
I assessed their understanding of multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, 1000 from millions to thousandths. Many students are still using charts so I will continue to review this skill. We did start to work on exponents and will continue this skill this week along with writing decimals in expanded, unit and word form.
READING
This week in reading, we will start going over different writing about reading strategies.  Ultimately there will be five, and along with their 20 minutes of reading each night, they will be responsible for choosing 1 strategy and writing about what they read.  This will begin in about two weeks, after the strategies have been taught and practiced in class.  This week they will learn:

visualizing: with this strategy, students use details and clues from the story to create a picture in their mind.  This could include:
  • visualizing the different characters
  • visualizing the setting
  • visualizing different actions/scenarios that take place
The students can then draw what they visualized and provide a description of what their drawing is showing.

make a connection: with this strategy, they can either make a:
  • text to self connection
  • text to text connection
  • text to media connection
  • text to world connection
The students would then describe what happened in their reading to provoke this connection.

WRITING: Continuing with generating different ideas for generating personal narratives (and drafting the start to some potential stories) we will be working on "firsts and lasts".  We will be reading the example narratives My Brave Year of Firsts and 17 Things I'm Not Allowed to do Anymore in order to spark ideas of firsts/last times they did something that left an impact on them.  They will then start a few different stories in their writing notebooks.  Ultimately in a few weeks, they will be choosing one of the stories they started and work to take it through the entire writing process.

WORDS THIER WAY: This week, we started Words Their Way.  This is a program that is individualized and geared towards improving spelling/sound recognition/phonemic awareness through word patterns.  Two weeks ago, your child took a spelling assessment to see where they are in terms of their phonemic awareness and have been placed in a group on the same level.  Each week, they will receive a new pattern and complete activities both in class and out of class for homework to solidify this pattern.  Their first assignment is tonight.  The homework schedule is as follows:
  • Monday--word sort.  Have your child sort their words and teach someone at home their pattern
  • Tuesday--speed sort.  Time your child and see how fast they can correctly sort their words.  See if they can beat their time.
  • Wednesday--blind sort.  Give your child their headings and read the words aloud individually so your child cannot see the word.  They must tell you the appropriate heading it goes under.
  • Thursday-- choice!  I have sent home a packet of all the homework guidelines.  On the last page, there is a list of different choice options for a Thursday activity.
  • FRIDAY THIS HOMEWORK IS DUE.  Someone at home must sign off on the homework sheet that your child completed an activity each night.
SOCIAL STUDIES

SCIENCE
Students will be setting up their science notebook and begin the unit on earth science. I will be assigning a lunar log which students will need to fill in each night. All they need to do is draw what they see of the moon each night and if they can't see or it is cloudy write "can't see". They will pass it after a month of observing.

WHAT WE ARE LEARNING
MATH
We are finishing up math iReady.  I also reviewed lesson 1- multiplying and dividing by 10s, 100s, and 1000s from millions to thousandths today.  We have been using our place value chart but will be learning to do this without that chart as their knowledge of place value continues to strengthen.
Students are challenged to complete 4 or more Zearn lessons a week this year.  Last week was difficult to do due to some interruptions and just technical difficulty.  Students can work on this from home if they would like to make their goal by the end of the week.  Email me if you would like me to send you their Zearn code.
Practice those multiplication tables! This is a third grade skill and your child needs to show mastery of this soon so they have a clear concrete understanding of this in order to move with skills needed for  5th grade skills such as algebra and fractions.  Students can practice using Xtramath.org at home or practicing with Beat their Time strategy.  Basically have them write out the table without answers out of order.  With 10 problems, 3 seconds each, their speed should be no more than 30 seconds. Have them practice using a stopwatch (available on phone) to see how fast they can get to complete the table.
The students can also create flash cards or practice using a worksheet that I have available for practice.  Lastly, I have compiled a list of interactive games on my livebinder. Here is the link the students can go to and practice their number.  http://www.livebinders.com/play/play?id=2109072
READING
Today students started i-ready in reading.  We are aiming to have this all finished by the end of the week so we can see where the kids are at.  Miss Chrusciel will also start assessing students for their updated guided reading level, so they can truly be picking books at their just right level.  This will probably start to happen towards the end of the week--most likely Thursday (Wednesday if she can).

WHAT WE ARE LEARNING
MATH
Students are working hard in fifth grade! We had fun getting to know each other using math numbers last week.  This week I assessed their multiplication tables.  Each student knows what number they need to practice and will learn a few strategies to help with this. For example, they are timing themselves practicing, they can make flashcards, practice online and/or use practice sheets.  We also completed lesson 1 and students are well on their way to show mastery in multiplying and dividing by 10s, 100s, and 1000s from millions to thousandths.

Tomorrow students will take the iReady assessment. The data gathered will help to make intervention groups and begin to fill some of the gaps each student has individually.
READING
We have spent some time re-building reading stamina.  Every child has chosen a book or two from either my library or the library at school.  Their homework is to read a minimum of 20 minutes each night.  Starting next week, they will have a nightly response to go along with their reading, but for now I am just asking that they read a minimum of 20 minutes/day.

This week we will also spend some time setting up their reading and writing journals, discussing what it means to choose a just right book, discussing the 40 Book Challenge they are striving for this year, and working on writing.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Their first assignment is a mapping activity.  They have all received a map of the United States and it is their job to label all the states using either a map or atlas, and then creating a key of where they have been, where they want to go, where they were born, etc.  This is being completed in class this week.
SCIENCE
Science will start next week.

Welcome

WELCOME 5th Graders

We are looking forward to seeing you at the end of August! We hope that you have an enjoyable summer. The 5th Grade is an exciting one because it will be your last year in elementary school. We have lots of wonderful things planned for you to do, but you must remember that we also expect you to act responsibly and to be a good role model for the younger students.

In our curriculum areas, you will be learning a lot of new things to help you get ready for the challenges of middle school. It is important that you use the planner that you will be receiving on the first day of school on a regular basis and to work hard to get assignments and projects handed in on time.

We also have many of fun activities in Grade 5 to look forward to. Students can take part in chorus and band, apply to be part of our Student Government, attend a fifth grade dance, go canoeing down the Nashua River, Grade 5 BBQ and so much more.

Below is a list of supplies that you will need for 5th Grade. Enjoy the rest of your summer and we will see you soon!
