-Reading Response
-Lunar Log
-Read 20 minutes
-Words Their Way
Tuesday--word sort.
Have your child sort their words and teach someone at home their pattern
Tuesday--speed sort.
Time your child and see how fast they can correctly sort their words. See if they can beat their time.
Wednesday--blind sort
Give your child their headings and read the words aloud individually so your child cannot see the word. They must tell you the appropriate heading it goes under.
Thursday-- choice!
I have sent home a packet of all the homework guidelines. On the last page, there is a list of different choice options for a Thursday activity.
FRIDAY THIS HOMEWORK IS DUE
Someone at home must sign off on the homework sheet that your child completed an activity each night.
WHAT WE ARE LEARNING
MATH
Tomorrow students will take an assessment on skills learned the last few weeks:
-writing decimals in word, standard, unit and expanded form
-comparing and ordering decimals
-rounding decimals
-adding and subtracting decimals
-applying same skills to word problems

We will spend time on intervention groups/lessons for a few days after assessment for those students that need it.
READING, WRITING, and WORDS THEIR WAY
READING:
The last two weeks have been spent working on quoting accurately from a text to support thinking.  This week, students will have another exit ticket demonstrating their knowledge on this skill.
We will also be moving on to identifying the difference between factual and opinion statements in nonfiction texts.

**Students will continue to have their reading response each night for homework.  After they read a minimum of 20 minutes, they are to develop a response to the section they read that evening.  Their choices in activities are: visualize, make a connection, give a summary, ask questions, or make predictions.  These are checked in class each day.**

WRITING:
Students will continue to work on structuring their narrative.  They are working to include all essential literary elements into their drafts-- main characters, developing the setting, problem, solution, beginning/middle/end, putting their events in chronological order, etc.

WORDS THEIR WAY:
Students will receive their new sort/pattern for the week.  As usual, students should be completing one assignment each night for homework to reinforce their word pattern--

Monday- word sort and teach someone at home the pattern
Tuesday-- speed sort
Wednesday-- blind sort
Thursday-- choice activity from packet
Friday-- DUE back to class
SOCIAL STUDIES
We will continue to look at Columbus' voyage through the point of view of his crew members.  We will also be working on map reading skills (specifically reading latitude and longitude) through tracking some of Columbus' early voyages
SCIENCE
Students have set up their Science Notebooks. We have begun to review the movement of the Earth and Moon. Students will be learning about rotation and revolution, along with how they cause the seasons and day and night. The students are expected to look at the moon each night and draw what they see on their Lunar log. This log is due at the end of the month.

WHAT WE ARE LEARNING
MATH
This week we will be working on rounding decimals.
I will post a picture of their notes on this blog so you understand our strategy.
1. underline place value
2. box in number and number to right.
3. decide if to round up or down
This is soooo much better than underlining, then putting an arrow...but they exact same concept just easier to follow.

We will also be adding and subtracting with decimals which is what they have been working on for morning work this past week.  If they use their understanding of place value, they will run through this skill.
READING, WRITING, and WORDS THEIR WAY
READING:
This week, we will continue to work on quoting accurately from a text to support a claim.  In order to answer comprehensive questions they are being asked to:
  • introduce their quote (where did you find this information in the text to support your claim-- for example: In paragraph 2 it says...
  • use a comma before a direct quotation is used
  • use quotation marks around phrases that are copied word for word from a source
**For reading homework, students will continue to read 20 minutes each night and write a reading response on the sheet provided.  This will be due each day at the start of class.

WRITING:
Last week, students went back to all of their prior writing pieces and selected one to take through the writing process.  This week, we will be working on developing and formatting their stories a bit better.  To do this we will be using two techniques-- developing a story map, and developing a timeline of important events.

WORDS THEIR WAY:
Students will receive their new sort/pattern for the week.  As always, this is due on Friday.
SOCIAL STUDIES
This week, we will be reading about Columbus' voyage through the eyes of his crew members-- we have read about it from Columbus' point of view and the Taino Native American's point of view so this will be a new perspective to analyze.
We will also be doing some more map reading activities throughout the week.

MATH
Students have received intervention on skills they needed support in during the last 6 weeks. Skills they were tested:
-multiplying and dividing decimals by 10, 100 and 1000. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49NPo4y9E9A and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvUeT3_xNj0 and
-using exponents to describe powers of 10 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNprxeZ_7JU
-metric conversions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NA3al1U5mjg&t=5s

I will send home assessments, along with any of the work they have been doing to show mastery of the skills. Students also continued to practice their multiplication fluency and Zearn. Some students were also able to work on math projects that they presented in class. I will share the links to their projects in a later post.

This week students will
-work on expanded, unit, word form https://www.youtube.com/watchv=IDxYa9hvaY4&t=134s
-compare decimals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbtRistgUBY
-Round Decimals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BndXwTMm-o
READING, WRITING, WORDS THEIR WAY
READING
Now that assessments are completed and we have set up our reading workshop, we will officially be moving into our first unit--Nonfiction.  Students received a checklist/rubric of the skills we will be covering throughout our unit and glued them into their reading notebooks.  This will be a log for which they will record/keep track of their grades throughout.  The first skill we will be working on this week and next week is quoting accurately from a text.  Specifically, when students are asked to either answer a question or back up a claim using factual evidence, they will know how to do this correctly instead of simply giving their opinion.  This will also help them down the road with citing sources in papers.  To do this they will be asked to:
  • Introduce the quote
  • Put a comma before the actual quote
  • Use quotation marks
For example:   In paragraph 4, the text states, "___________".

**Reading Response homework:**
I was impressed with the work I saw last week regarding responses to their 20 minutes of reading.  This week, I am asking students to branch out and try a variety of strategies regarding their reading.  Many chose the common strategy of "visualizing" every night.  I have talked to students and said that while they can repeat strategies, they cannot do the same one every night.

WRITING:
This week, we will be discussing how fellow writers talk and listen to each other in order to give effective feed back instead of simply, "it's good."
This week, students will also be going back to all their stories they have started in their notebooks and choose ONE that they want to take through the writing process and incorporate each new skill taught in writing workshop throughout this unit.

WORDS THEIR WAY
As usual, students have received their new sort/pattern for the week.  Homework will be due on Friday.
SOCIAL STUDIES
This week we will continue to read and learn about Columbus and his infamous voyage.  We will also be doing some map skills activities regarding his routes traveled.

MATH
Students were assessed last week on a few standards that we have been learning over the last month. These standards are in Numbers and Operations which includes multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, 1000 from million to thousandths and problem solving using this same strategy, exponential form and standard form. They were also assessed on converting the metric system. I will be having interventions on each of these standards this week and reassess those that did not show mastery.

During this time, we will continue to work on writing numbers in word, unit and standard form. HW this week will be interventions or geometry.
READING
This week, students will be learning their last writing about reading strategy--writing a summary.  A summary is a brief description of a reading selection. This usually poses a challenge for most students, whether it be they struggle to remember enough to write a summary, or they give too many details.  I will be posing 3 different strategies the kids can use in order to write a sufficient summary of their reading:
  • Strategy 1: Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then
    • somebody-- who are the main characters?
    • wanted-- what does the character wanted to do/want to happen?
    • but-- what problems do they face?
    • so-- how does the character try and solve the problem?
    • then-- what is the resolution to the story
  • Strategy 2: Use sequence words
    • First....
    • Next....
    • After that....
    • Last...
    • Finally....
    • In the end....
  • Strategy 3: Tell
    • who?
    • what?
    • where?
    • when?
    • why?
    • how?
**As part of their reading 20 minutes for homework this week, students will be asked to choose any of the 5 writing about reading strategies they have learned over the last few weeks to write about their reading each night.  I will be sending home a copy of the different strategies and a description of each.  They will also have a sheet to record their responses on.  I will be checking these each day.

WRITING: In writing, we will continue to generate ideas for personal narratives and write short stories in their notebooks.  We will also be looking at a variety of sample narratives and discuss qualities of a good narrative.  Next week, the kids will be going back into all the pieces they have started and choose the one they feel has the most potential to take through the writing process.

WORDS THIER WAY: As usual, the students will receive their new word sort/pattern for the week.  Homework will be due on Friday.
  • Monday-- word sort/teach someone at home
  • Tuesday-- speed sort
  • Wednesday-- blind sort
  • Thursday-- choice activity
  • FRIDAY THIS HOMEWORK IS DUE.  Someone at home must sign off on the homework sheet that your child completed an activity each night.
SOCIAL STUDIES
This week, we will be taking more of a focus on Columbus through his point of view.
SCIENCE
Students will be setting up their science notebook and begin the unit on earth science. I will be assigning a lunar log which students will need to fill in each night. All they need to do is draw what they see of the moon each night and if they can't see or it is cloudy write "can't see". They will pass it after a month of observing.
