Monday--word sort.
Have your child sort their words and teach someone at home their pattern
Tuesday--speed sort.
Time your child and see how fast they can correctly sort their words. See if they can beat their time.
Wednesday--blind sort.
Give your child their headings and read the words aloud individually so your child cannot see the word. They must tell you the appropriate heading it goes under.
Thursday-- choice!
I have sent home a packet of all the homework guidelines. On the last page, there is a list of different choice options for a Thursday activity.
FRIDAY THIS HOMEWORK IS DUE.
Someone at home must sign off on the homework sheet that your child completed an activity each night.
WHAT WE ARE LEARNING
MATH
We will continue to be working on multiplying and dividing this week. Students will be connecting area model and distributive property with partial products and standard algorithm. They will continue to work on their multiplication and division tables along with filling the gap with IReady lessons.
Here are some links to support lessons learned this week:
Lesson 4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DfTwwGHYpc
Lesson 5: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGknTYYufQo
Lesson 6: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHwxH617pKs
READING, WRITING, and WORDS THEIR WAY
READING:
This week we will continue to work on what we started just before the break--identifying the main idea and key details of a nonfiction text.  We will be using the boxes and bullets structure to help students organize their understanding--main idea goes in the box and key, supporting details follow as bullets.

WRITING:
This week and next week we will be focusing on figurative language and how to add it into their writing to add more descriptive detail.  This week, we will be focusing on similes and metaphors.  Next week we will work with hyperboles and onomatopoeia.

WORDS THEIR WAY:
Students received their new sort this week.  As always, their homework will be due on Friday.
  • Monday-- teach someone at home your sort
  • Tuesday-- speed sort
  • Wednesday-- blind sort
  • Thursday-- choice activity from list
  • Friday-- DUE
**Students are also responsible for their 20 minutes of reading and a reading response to go with what they read every night.  These will be checked each day for completion.
SOCIAL STUDIES
We are wrapping up our first unit! Students will be starting their performance task this week. Their job is to create a journal about Columbus' first voyage and encounter with the Taino Native Americans. In their journal, they are responsible for discussing the reasons for exploration, the new technologies they were introduced to, the encounter with others in the New World, and clearly express their point of view. Students will be given a choice as to what point of view they would like to take on as the writer. They can either write their journal as Columbus, a crew member, a Taino, or Queen Isabella/King Ferdinand.
SCIENCE
Starting last week, the students began a Mystery Science unit on our Watery Planet, including the water cycle, resources and systems. This unit will help students develop the idea that water is a profoundly important natural resource, but one which requires surprising ingenuity to find and maintain. Last week's lesson answered the essential question of "How much water is on the Earth?". In this mystery, students use estimation and graphing to discover the surprising difference in the amounts of fresh and salt water on Earth. This week, students will answer the question "When you turn on the faucet, where does the water come from?". In this mystery, students construct an explanation about a surprising phenomenon: the existence of underground water. Then they will play a game in which they must obtain and combine information and groundwater in order to select the best site to build a town.
REMINDERS
-Field Trip to see Wonder on Tuesday, Dec. 5.  Cost of trip is $15.00. Please return permission slips for Wonder and Beaver Brook along with $15.00 by Friday.   Thank you.

WHAT WE ARE LEARNING
MATH
We will be multiplying and dividing fractions for the next few weeks.  Here are some videos to go along with the lessons we will be learning between now and Thanksgiving break: Lesson 1-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_9_NGVOK0s
Lesson 2-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJjtpkgK5pw
Lesson 3- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJoMoKq_Tak
Lesson 4- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0Vzo1PR7qg

Please continue to have your child work on their multiplication tables or division.  They can go on Xtramath, practice timing self using a piece of paper that they write the table down out of order or make flash cards. They need to have these tables memorized as soon as possible, in order to be proficient with their 5th grade math skills.
READING, WRITING, and WORDS THEIR WAY
READING:
This week we will be focusing on a new skill--identifying the main idea of a text and the key details that support this idea.  Because our first unit is nonfiction, we will be using nonfiction texts to practice identifying main idea and key details.  However, students will be transferring this knowledge over into their guided reading groups where they read a blend of fiction and nonfiction texts.

**For homework, students are to continue reading a minimum of 20 minutes each night.  They are also to complete a reading response to accompany their reading.  They may choose one of the following strategies:
  • Make a prediction and use text evidence to back up prediction
  • Ask questions
  • Make connections (text to self, text to text, text to world, or text to media)
  • Visualize
  • Summarize
WRITING:
Continuing with their personal narratives, this week we will be working on creating strong leads and endings.  Students will be going back into their narratives after instruction to improve the beginning and ending of their story.

WORDS THEIR WAY:
Per usual, students will receive their new sort/pattern for the week.  They are to complete one assignment each night to reinforce their sort.
  • Monday-- sort words and teach someone their pattern
  • Tuesday-- speed sort
  • Wednesday-- blind sort
  • Thursday-- choice activity
  • Friday: DUE
SOCIAL STUDIES
This week we will finish up our unit by learning about a few more explorers-- Hernando de Soto and Vasco da Gama.  After the Thanksgiving break, students will receive their Unit 1 performance task where they will be asked to create a journal of exploration from the point of view of either Christopher Columbus, a Taino Native American, King Ferdinand/Queen Isabella, or a crew member.
SCIENCE
Students will be tested on the moon phases and the movement of the earth, moon and sun on Monday(Harvard) or Tuesday (Dartmouth). They should be using their study guide that they created last week to study! We will be moving on to the water cycle starting Tuesday! This unit will be hands on and very interactive with their first essential question being "How much fresh water is on the earth?".

WHAT WE ARE LEARNING
MATH
Intervention for the last 6 week assessment ended yesterday.  Students worked really hard to work on some of the skills they were struggling with and made some great gains during this time. There assessment will go home this week and I will share with you all their accomplishments they have made so far this year at conferences. However, if you have any questions, please feel free to email me at ackermant@nashua.edu.

Starting this week the students will be introduced to multiplying and dividing decimals.  This will be our next unit of study.  Please take time to practice multiplication or division with your child and encourage them to do xtramath at home along with just practicing the "old fashion" way- flash cards or reciting them out of order as quick as they can.

I have spoken to each of the classes about Zearn and iReady.  Students should be on lesson 11 in Zearn or at least doing 1 or 2 lessons a week. They can accomplish this easily if they come in to school on time, focus on finishing their morning work quickly and starting a lesson.  Unfortunately, some students have not finished more than 1 or 2 lessons all of October. I have spoken to each of them individually and expressed my concerns, reviewed expectations, and discussed strategies to ensure that they can accomplish finishing 1 or 2 a week.  If you have a computer at home, please take a minute and have your students share with you the website and ask them where they are in their lessons.  Again, they should be around lesson 11.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email me or call the school. With the new phone system you can leave a message directly to me voice mail and I will get back to you quickly.
READING, WRITING, and WORDS THEIR WAY
READING:
This week, we will be focusing on a new skill--identifying different nonfiction text features and determining the author's purpose for including them.  We will be reading a variety of nonfiction articles and applying this knowledge base to them.

*As always, students will be asked to continue writing about their 20 minutes of reading each night.  They may choose any one of the following strategies:
  • Visualizing (drawing what they the visualized happening and including a description of what the drawing represents)
  • Make connections (text to self, text to media, text to text, or text to world)
  • Summarize
  • Ask questions
  • Make predictions (and elaborate on why using evidence from the text)
WRITING:
This week, we will continue to work on expanding their narratives.  Specifically, we will be working on elaborating on important parts and using paragraphs to organize their writing.  The overall goal is to have students be able to include/do the following:
  • slow down the actions in their story
  • add dialogue
  • give (sensory) details
  • show small actions
  • add internal thinking
  • separate into paragraphs
WORDS THEIR WAY:
Students will receive their new sort/pattern for the week.  They should be completing at least one homework assignment each night at home to reinforce the pattern.
  • Monday-- sort words and teach someone your pattern
  • Tuesday-- speed sort
  • Wednesday-- blind sort
  • Thursday-- choice from page of activities
  • Friday-- DUE back to school
SOCIAL STUDIES
We will continue to analyze early European exploration.  We will be taking a step back from Columbus and taking a look at two new explorers-- John Cabot & Ferdinand Magellan
SCIENCE
Students are currently learning about the moon, how it moves and the lunar cycle. They have learned new vocabulary, reviewed the phases, and participated in a simulation of the moon cycle using a light source and foam ball to illuminate the phases. The order of the moon cycle is: New moon, Waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, Full moon, Waning gibbous, Last Quarter, Waning crescent and back to new moon. This happens in a 28 day period. Here is a link to some interactive moon sites to help your child learn the phases. They will also have a study guide go home with them tomorrow or Monday. They will be tested on the phases in a week.
