WHAT WE ARE LEARNING

MATH
|
Students have received intervention on skills they needed support in during the last 6 weeks. Skills they were tested: -multiplying and dividing decimals by 10, 100 and 1000. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49NPo4y9E9A and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvUeT3_xNj0 and -using exponents to describe powers of 10 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNprxeZ_7JU -metric conversions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NA3al1U5mjg&t=5s I will send home assessments, along with any of the work they have been doing to show mastery of the skills. Students also continued to practice their multiplication fluency and Zearn. Some students were also able to work on math projects that they presented in class. I will share the links to their projects in a later post. This week students will -work on expanded, unit, word form https://www.youtube.com/watchv=IDxYa9hvaY4&t=134s -compare decimals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbtRistgUBY -Round Decimals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BndXwTMm-o |
READING, WRITING, WORDS THEIR WAY
|
READING
Now that assessments are completed and we have set up our reading workshop, we will officially be moving into our first unit--Nonfiction. Students received a checklist/rubric of the skills we will be covering throughout our unit and glued them into their reading notebooks. This will be a log for which they will record/keep track of their grades throughout. The first skill we will be working on this week and next week is quoting accurately from a text. Specifically, when students are asked to either answer a question or back up a claim using factual evidence, they will know how to do this correctly instead of simply giving their opinion. This will also help them down the road with citing sources in papers. To do this they will be asked to:
For example: In paragraph 4, the text states, "___________".
**Reading Response homework:**
I was impressed with the work I saw last week regarding responses to their 20 minutes of reading. This week, I am asking students to branch out and try a variety of strategies regarding their reading. Many chose the common strategy of "visualizing" every night. I have talked to students and said that while they can repeat strategies, they cannot do the same one every night.
WRITING:
This week, we will be discussing how fellow writers talk and listen to each other in order to give effective feed back instead of simply, "it's good."
This week, students will also be going back to all their stories they have started in their notebooks and choose ONE that they want to take through the writing process and incorporate each new skill taught in writing workshop throughout this unit.
WORDS THEIR WAY
As usual, students have received their new sort/pattern for the week. Homework will be due on Friday.
|
SOCIAL STUDIES
|
This week we will continue to read and learn about Columbus and his infamous voyage. We will also be doing some map skills activities regarding his routes traveled.
|
SCIENCE
|
Students have set up their Science Notebooks. We have begun to review the movement of the Earth and Moon. Students will be learning about rotation and revolution, along with how they cause the seasons and day and night. The students are expected to look at the moon each night and draw what they see on their Lunar log. This log is due at the end of the month.
