WHAT WE ARE LEARNING
MATH
Students were assessed last week on a few standards that we have been learning over the last month. These standards are in Numbers and Operations which includes multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, 1000 from million to thousandths and problem solving using this same strategy, exponential form and standard form. They were also assessed on converting the metric system. I will be having interventions on each of these standards this week and reassess those that did not show mastery.
During this time, we will continue to work on writing numbers in word, unit and standard form. HW this week will be interventions or geometry. |
READING
This week, students will be learning their last writing about reading strategy--writing a summary. A summary is a brief description of a reading selection. This usually poses a challenge for most students, whether it be they struggle to remember enough to write a summary, or they give too many details. I will be posing 3 different strategies the kids can use in order to write a sufficient summary of their reading:
**As part of their reading 20 minutes for homework this week, students will be asked to choose any of the 5 writing about reading strategies they have learned over the last few weeks to write about their reading each night. I will be sending home a copy of the different strategies and a description of each. They will also have a sheet to record their responses on. I will be checking these each day.
WRITING: In writing, we will continue to generate ideas for personal narratives and write short stories in their notebooks. We will also be looking at a variety of sample narratives and discuss qualities of a good narrative. Next week, the kids will be going back into all the pieces they have started and choose the one they feel has the most potential to take through the writing process.
WORDS THIER WAY: As usual, the students will receive their new word sort/pattern for the week. Homework will be due on Friday.

SOCIAL STUDIES
This week, we will be taking more of a focus on Columbus through his point of view.
SCIENCE
Students will be setting up their science notebook and begin the unit on earth science. I will be assigning a lunar log which students will need to fill in each night. All they need to do is draw what they see of the moon each night and if they can't see or it is cloudy write "can't see". They will pass it after a month of observing.
